Among three high-profiled native electric vehicle (EV) makers, Li Auto Inc and Xpeng Inc and faced significant slowdown in their delivery growth. NIO Inc managed to reverse the delivery laggard, recovering from the supply chain hit from the Covid-19 lockdowns.

Li Auto delivered 4,571 vehicles in August, representing a 33% year-over-year (YoY) growth, but decreased 56% from the previous month. Xpeng, the annual delivery champion among China’s homegrown emerging EV makers last year, shipped 9,578 units, falling 16.9% month-over-month (MoM). And its delivery represents a 32.8% YoY growth, weaker than the 43% increase in July. Delivery of NIO rose 6% MoM to 10,766 vehicles, the highest volume in the EV companies that released recent data. With the yearly increase of 81.6%, NIO also saw the faster growth in shipment than its two peers.

AITO, a brand jointly developed by Huawei and Chongqing Sokon"s brand Seres, boasted the most rapid growth in delivery. Seres sold 14,600 new energy vehicles (NEVs) in August, jumping 310.77% YoY, and 10,045 vehicles out of them were AITO-branded, the first time topping 10,000 units. AITO that month recorded a strong 1277.91% YoY increase. The brand is set to maintain such growth as it will roll out its first full-electric model M5 on September 6.

However, the sluggish delivery for Li Auto and Xpeng seems just a temporary issue as both of these manufacturers have new model to release, which made potential buyers wait the launch rather than ordering existing models on sale.

Xpeng unveiled G9, an all-electric luxury SUV, three weeks ago and received 22,819 pre-orders in the first 24 hours, well more than the launch of either of Xpeng’s three flagship models G3, P7 and P5 . Li Auto president Yanan Shen said his company has commenced deliveries of its flagship smart SUV, Li L9, and to have heard from initial users that the model exceeded their expectations. He also noted Li L8, a large premium smart SUV, is scheduled to launch and start delivery in November.
