Beijing, June 30 (TMTPOST) – China’s first desktop operating system developer platform openKylin is officially launched today.
It is worth noting that openKylin is a developer platform for designing and developing desktop operating systems. It is also an open developer community.
The developer platform was built by CIC, KylinSoft and other organizations, tasked with the goal of building open and innovative desktop operating systems.
Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, Internet of Thing, big data and cloud computing heavily rely on open-source codes. Statistics show that over 80% of the codes used in these emerging technologies are open-source. Open-source has become a new innovation and collaboration mode across the globe.
China highlighted in its 14th five-year plan that support should be given to the development of open-source digital technology community and the refinement of intellectual property laws protecting open-source assets. China also said that support should be given to encourage companies to make their software codes, hardware design and application service open-source.
The openKylin platform provides technical references for the development of Chinese operating systems. Software is fundamental to the development of a country’s digital economy and technological competitiveness.
“At present, most of the core technologies that China’s core software products use come from open-source communities overseas. There is a lack of standards and platforms while the contributions from open-source communities are very scattered,” Liao Xiangke, director of the developer platform’s consulting commission and an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering said. “We do not have high quality innovation in basic software and it is very hard for us to share technologies.”
“We especially lag behind in the operating system sector, particularly in terms of software and hardware ecosystem of the Linux-based desktop operating system,” Liao said.
